Spooky atmosphere and a great story save Dracula: Origin from being a formulaic pixel hunt.

Good storytelling never goes out of style. For proof, check out Dracula: Origin, a point-and-click reimagination of Bram Stoker's classic novel from Frogwares that delivers a gothic tale as atmospheric and chilling as a London fog. While you couldn't ask for a more done-to-death story, the treatment of this legendary material is both respectful and innovative, with familiar characters and scenes being mixed in with all-new escapades set across Europe and the Middle East. Too many pixel hunts and logic puzzles that occasionally stray into "good luck solving this without a walkthrough" territory cause a few problems, although these frustrations aren't enough to ruin a great Victorian spook story.

Hmm, call it a crazy hunch, but this just might be Dracula's lair.

Dracula: Origin keeps the bare bones of the Stoker novel, but adds to it by branching out in a few places and changing the focus from drawing-room horror to something of a detective story. Vamp hunter Van Helsing moves to center stage from his supporting role in the novel, as the dour professor turns sleuth and ventures to London, Cairo, Vienna, and, of course, Transylvania on a one-man quest to save poor Mina Murray and stop Dracula's plans to resurrect the dead. The story unfolds like a mash-up of Stoker's Dracula, any number of Sherlock Holmes short stories, and the less weird tales of HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, with you playing vampire hunter, gumshoe, and intrepid researcher.

The script doesn't borrow much from Stoker, although it is excellent in its own right as a modern take on the old Victorian penny dreadfuls that influenced Dracula. Voice acting is generally impressive, as long as you've got a taste for melodrama. Van Helsing in particular gets awfully worked up over the slightest little thing, becoming so uptight over such minor annoyances as running into a locked door that you'll frequently think that Dracula himself has just jumped out of the shadows.

Counterbalancing this fresh story is gameplay that feels like something out of a point-and-click adventure made 20 years ago. As Van Helsing, you stroll from one scene to another, carefully scanning the surroundings for anything that can be pocketed and later used to construct some sort of contraption necessary for opening a door or unlocking a safe, for example. You gather and hoard all sorts of items, such as meat hooks, mummy wrappings, and even a jar of flies. There generally isn't any rhyme or reason to all of this scrap collecting, other than that you know you're playing an adventure game, so you're going to need this junk at some point down the road. Van Helsing's entire philosophy of vampire hunting is expressed in one line he repeats over and over: "This might be useful. I'm taking it."

Pixel hunting is another issue. Most of the screens are shrouded in gloom as well as cluttered with furniture and other background details, making it nearly impossible to pick out all of the many objects that you need to collect without using the spacebar command to highlight them. Some of the tinier items in the game are all but hidden in the scenery, which speaks well for the wonderfully detailed backdrops like the Egyptian tomb and Dracula's castle in Transylvania, but not for the game's playability. So you're left with the spacebar, and that seems like a cheat as it pretty much spotlights exactly what you have to do in every location. Still, it's absolutely necessary unless you want to tediously scroll over every single pixel in every single scene.

While Van Helsing's trip to Cairo might be a departure from Bram Stoker's novel, ancient tombs and mummies are a great addition to any gothic horror tale.

A few of the set-piece logic puzzles are geared to cause similar frustration. Dracula: Origin is loaded with braintwisters that range from obvious to maddeningly obtuse. Lack of proper instructions is a big problem with many of them, as you're occasionally plopped in front of a plaque, a checkerboard, or even a chemistry litmus test without any guidance as to what exactly you're supposed to be doing. All you can do much of the time is blindly experiment with whatever you can move in the puzzle in an attempt to figure out what it might be all about, and then take a crack at actually solving it. Yet even though it seems like the puzzles would be better off if they came with FAQs, their inventive design and sheer deviousness outweighs any irritation you might have over the lack of instructions. Many could have served as the linchpins for a Sherlock Holmes mystery, and all are perfectly suited to a quest about slaying a vampire. You move a pentagram to reveal eerie Latin writing, decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs on a cursed tomb, and examine medieval carvings of demons and sinners to open up a crypt. All could certainly be a little more intuitive, but they couldn't be any more imaginative, or more appropriate for this storyline.

The game features revamped create modes, which have gotten a complete overhaul compared to past years' editions. In addition to the original create-a-superstar and create-an-entrance modes, the game introduces the WWE Story Designer mode, where the player can now design storylines featuring WWE's weekly shows (Raw, SmackDown, or ECW) and pay-per-views with storylines, scenarios, and matches of their creations using a variety of preset options, with over 100 different animations and 25 different locations to design each scene.[15][16] Included in the designing options for scenarios are the words the superstars speak from the player's created script, the text that appears as the subtitles, and the actions the superstar performs; however, there is a limit to the number of characters that can appear in a scenario.[15] Subtitles can be written in through a controller or through a USB keyboard.[17] Similar to previous editions in the series, the player can create storylines; however, the player can now control how long the storylines goes on, how many superstars or Divas are involved, and what takes place in the storylines. The match-making feature allows the player to set a match type, set a stipulation, and set any winning conditions. In addition to using created superstars, the player may also integrate actual WWE superstars and Divas into their created storylines, scenarios, or matches.[15] On the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, each storyline can feature up to 500 segments including 450 matches and 50 scenarios, while the Wii, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable versions have a limit of 55 segments.[16][18] Created wrestlers are limited in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to ten appearances in the mode.[16]

The create-a-superstar feature has also been retooled since WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. The game now features three-dimensional apparel, unlike in previous games where it appeared as "painted on". The apparel moves realistically; for example, a robe moves with each of the superstar's movements. Another improvement to the create-a-superstar mode is the shortened loading time of the menus in comparison to previous iterations.[15][19] A new point system has been implemented into the create-a-superstar mode where each item is given a point value and the player is able to attach up to 48 points of items.[20] For each created wrestler, the player can create up to three alternate attires for them.[21] The mode also features an additional Paint Tool in which players can create their own design that they can use as to use as a logo or a tattoo for their created wrestler.[19] In addition to the create-a-superstar mode, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 versions of WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 introduces a new mode called Superstar Threads, in which the player can create three alternate attires for existing wrestlers in the game by customizing the colors of their attire.[14][15][19]

Unlocking abilities for a created superstar has been made easier, as players no longer have to assign points or take the created superstar into a career mode specifically to improve their attributes. Instead, attributes can be increased in all modes of the game, including regular exhibition matches as well as the create-a-superstar story in the Road to Wrestlemania mode. There are 21 unlockable abilities, including new ones such as Fired Up, Pull Back Attacks, Exploder Turnbuckle Attack, and others.[22]

The create-a-finisher option has also been reworked, with the addition of 30 percent more content. Introduced in the previous game, the player was able to create a finisher in the front grapple position. In WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010, the mode has been expanded to include aerial techniques. The player is also able to adjust the jumping trajectory and speed of the maneuver.[15]

Along with these new customization features, players for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are able to share their created wrestlers, moves and shows online with other players. The player can also rate other creations online in terms of quality.[15][19] Evolving from the previous year's Highlight Reel mode, a compilation of the match's highlights will be listed after each match. The player can subsequently choose to watch or save any of these highlights.[15] Players are also able to convert their created Highlight Reels into entrance movies for their created wrestlers. Players of the PlayStation 3 version are able to upload their highlight reel videos directly onto YouTube.[17]

A new addition to the game this year is the WWE Rivals feature. This option allows the player to set superstars' allies and enemies which can be used to their advantage or disadvantage in exhibition matches with the interference option on. If a superstar is set as an enemy, then that enemy may appear during the peak of a match. The enemy has a number of choices including standing by the ring and breaking up pinfalls, using his or her finisher, or coming in with a weapon. Allies work in a similar fashion. The intensity of the rivalry or alliance can be changed by changing the position of where the certain superstars are slotted.[23]
